What is PTC Windchill?

PTC Windchill is product lifecycle management (PLM) software. It keeps CAD models, parts, BOMs, documents and engineering changes in one controlled system, with workflows for review, release and change. It runs on your own servers or as Windchill+, PTC's SaaS edition.

Manufacturers use Windchill so that design, manufacturing, quality and suppliers all work from the same released data, with a full history of who changed what and why.

Why are Windchill customers upgrading in 2026?

Because PTC's licensing and support dates have caught up with older installations. Legacy licence renewals ended on 30 September 2026, Windchill 12.1.2 extended support ends in December 2026, and 13.0 support is scheduled to end in June 2027.

Already past12.0 and 11.x unsupported12.0 support ended in June 2024, extended to June 2025. PTC fixes security issues only on supported releases.

How does the Modelcam Windchill upgrade work?

A Windchill upgrade is a separate, fixed-price service. We scan your system read-only first, send a fixed price and date, rehearse the whole upgrade on a copy of production, and switch over on one planned weekend. Our kit wraps PTC's own Upgrade Manager, so every step stays within PTC-supported methods.

  1. Qualify

A 15-minute call: current release, licence type, renewal date, customization level, integrations.

    Exit: fit confirmed, NDA signed
  2. Free health check

Your admin runs our read-only scanner. We review the output and talk to your PLM admin.

    Exit: scanner output received
  3. Report and fixed quote

Readiness score, risk list, ePLM role mapping, complexity tier, fixed price and plan.

    Exit: signed order
  4. Build on staging

Production cloned to staging, scripted install of 13.1, Upgrade Manager run, customizations ported.

    Exit: staging upgraded, code compiles
  5. Test and UAT

Automated regression pack, then two rounds of testing by your key users.

    Exit: UAT sign-off
  6. Cutover weekend

Freeze, final data upgrade, validation checks, one go or no-go decision, rollback ready.

    Exit: go-live sign-off
  7. Hypercare

Close support for the first weeks on the new release, then a Keep-it-Current AMC.

    Exit: handover to support
  8. AI on clean data

Optional: PTC's AI plugins or private AI on your upgraded, cleaned-up data.

    Exit: pilot scoped

What does the free Windchill health check cover?

A read-only script pack that your own admin runs on your Windchill server. It never writes to Windchill or the database, every query is listed in a manifest you can review first, and a counts-only mode leaves out object names for sensitive data. The same scan is re-run after the upgrade as the before-and-after baseline.

What do you get in the readiness report?

  • A red, amber or green score for each of the seven modules
  • A complexity tier, Standard or Complex, which sets the fixed price
  • The top risks, with the fix for each
  • A draft ePLM role mapping based on how your users actually work
  • A clean-up list your team can start on the same week

Pit-stop rules for the cutover weekend

A pit stop takes seconds because everything is done before the car arrives. Our cutover weekend only replays steps we have already timed twice on staging.

Nothing new on the weekendEvery step is rehearsed and timed on staging first.
One person, one jobEvery step has a single named owner.
One go or no-go voiceA single decision point, agreed with you in advance.
Rollback always readyA tested way back to the old release if a check fails.

How we handle your access and data

  • Access grows in steps: read-only for the health check, admin on staging for the build, time-boxed production access only for cutover.
  • Named Modelcam engineers only, over your VPN with multi-factor authentication.
  • No customer data copied to Modelcam systems. Your data stays on your network throughout.
  • All access logged and revoked at the end of hypercare. NDA before the health check, and a separate data annexure for defence or export-controlled work.

How does a Windchill implementation work?

In five steps: map how your engineering data and changes flow today, configure Windchill around that, migrate your existing data, connect CAD and ERP, then train your users and go live. Projects are phased, so one product line or site goes first.

  1. Discover

Workshops on parts, BOMs, change and release. A target process and a phased plan.

  2. Configure

Contexts, lifecycles, workflows, numbering, attributes, roles and access rules.

  3. Migrate

CAD files, documents and part data loaded and checked against source counts.

  4. Integrate

Creo and other CAD, ERP for parts and BOMs, SSO, and reporting.

  5. Train and go live

Role-based training, a supported go-live, then AMC support.

Windchill or Windchill+: which should you choose?

Choose Windchill+ if you want PTC to host and upgrade the system and you can live with limited customization. Choose on-premise Windchill if you have heavy customizations, strict data rules or deep integrations. We implement and support both.

How does AI work with Windchill in 2026?

PTC now ships AI as Windchill plugins. The Windchill AI Assistant (April 2026) answers plain-language questions about documents in your vault, with links to the sources, and AI Parts Rationalization (January 2026) finds similar and duplicate parts. Both work only as well as your data is clean.

PTC's roadmap adds parts, BOMs and changes to the assistant, change-management agents, and Model Context Protocol (MCP) access to Windchill services. Private enterprise AI covers the on-premise side.

  • Data clean-up from the health check: duplicates, stuck workflows, orphaned objects
  • Setup of PTC's AI plugins, access rules and indexing
  • The modelcam AI engine on your network, answering across Windchill, ERP and documents
  • Agents that draft change requests and impact lists for an engineer to approve

Questions about Windchill PLM services

Updated

What is Windchill software used for?

PTC Windchill is PLM software used to manage CAD models, parts, BOMs, documents and engineering changes in one controlled system. Teams use it to release designs, run change processes and give manufacturing and suppliers the right revision.

What are PLM services?

PLM services are the consulting and engineering work around a PLM system: choosing and planning it, implementing it, migrating data, integrating it with CAD and ERP, customizing it, upgrading it and supporting users. Modelcam provides these services for PTC Windchill.

How much does a Windchill upgrade cost?

It depends on your release, customizations, integrations and data volume, which is why we quote only after the free read-only health check. You receive a fixed price and a fixed plan within 48 hours of the scan, with no open-ended billing.

How long does a Windchill upgrade take?

Most of the work happens on a staging copy of production, so your users keep working. The switch to the new release happens on one planned cutover weekend. The health check sets the full timeline, and the quote fixes the date.

Can we upgrade straight from Windchill 11 or 12 to 13.1?

It depends on your source release. PTC publishes the supported upgrade paths for each release, and older releases can need an intermediate step. The health check confirms your exact path before we quote.

What changed for Windchill licences on 30 September 2026?

PTC stopped renewing legacy Windchill licence packages. Renewals now move to ePLM role-based packages. We map your users to roles from your License Management Utility export, so you buy for how people actually use Windchill.

What is the difference between Windchill and Windchill+?

Windchill runs on your servers or your own cloud and you control upgrades and customization. Windchill+ is PTC's SaaS edition: PTC hosts it and upgrades it automatically, with tighter limits on custom code.

Does the Windchill health check change anything on our system?

No. It is read-only. Your own admin runs the scripts, every query is listed in a manifest you can review first, and a counts-only mode leaves out object names.

Can you migrate SOLIDWORKS PDM or shared drives to Windchill?

Yes. We migrate CAD files, documents and part data from shared drives, SOLIDWORKS PDM, other PDM systems and older Windchill installations, and check counts before and after.

Can Windchill be integrated with SAP or another ERP?

Yes. We connect Windchill to SAP, Oracle, Nankatai and other ERPs so released parts and BOMs flow to manufacturing without re-typing, using PTC connectors or Windchill REST services.

Do you provide Windchill services in the US and outside India?

Yes. US customers can contract with Modelcam Technologies LLC, and our engineers deliver remotely in your time zone, with on-site visits when the project needs them. We also work with customers in other countries.

Does Modelcam sell Windchill licences?

Licences come from PTC or your PTC reseller. Modelcam delivers the services: consulting, implementation, upgrades, integration and support.
